First things first! You are going to want to have a set of amber glass spray bottles for ANY homemade oil spray. This is the best deal on Amazon and these bottles work great: (click me). It comes with 8 bottles in various sizes for just $18.99. All of these bottles will be utilized once you start to see how well your oils work and you’ll probably want another one!

Alright, on to the good stuff. Do essential oils kill mosquitoes? Is there a magic essential oil mosquito spray? No and yes. Essential oils can kill mosquitoes in high concentration, but this is super inefficient and you’ll drive yourself nuts looking around for mosquitoes to spray. There is a reason there aren’t many direct contact mosquito sprays, but a ton of repellents–cause those skeeters are sneaky! Essential oils are excellent at repelling and deterring mosquitoes from snacking at your exposed skin outdoors!

In fact, there are a bunch of essential oil mosquito sprays. It is important to remember that these sprays will repel and deter mosquitoes for about 2 hours MAX. The trade-off for not using chemicals like DEET is the need to reapply the natural ingredients more frequently. But, that is one of the biggest reasons to use an essential oil mosquito spray! No carcinogenic chemicals being rubbed on your skin that could cause health issues for your family.

We will focus on two essential oil mosquito spray recipes! Our first essential oil mosquito repellent combines Lavender and Lemongrass. The advantage to using the lavender and lemongrass spray is that it also is effective against small house flies and annoying gnats (Plus it smells AMAZING)! The second essential oil mosquito repellent is a combination of Lavender and Citronella. Fortunately, these mosquito spray essential oils are extremely common and affordable!

Here is some research on these oils effectiveness against mosquitoes:

Lemongrass. Lavender. Citronella.

Making the Essential Oil Mosquito Spray

1) Grab your 4 oz bottle from your set. You’ll want to use the 4 oz so you can easily tuck it in a purse or bag for outdoor use!

2) Grab Lavender and Citronella OR Lavender and Lemongrass.

3) Fill the bottle halfway with water (tap works fine, but filtered is always better).

4) Add 20 drops of Lavender.

5) Add 20 drops of Citronella OR Lemongrass.

6) Fill the rest of the bottle with water.

7) Shake hardily and you now have your essential oils mosquito spray! Repelling mosquitoes with essential oils has never been easier!

*The scent for either should be extremely strong. If you do not like the smell of the citronella, you can add only 10 drops instead of 20. If you are using the lemongrass and lavender combination, you may experience some small bees finding you attractive. For young kids, we recommend using just 5 drops of each oil as the high concentration may cause skin irritation.

How to Apply

Simply spray on your exposed skin! At a minimum I would hit the wrists, neck, legs, and definitely the ankle area. Sometimes the spray bottles will shoot the liquid out in a stream instead of a mist–that is OK, just rub the oils in like you were applying sunscreen. Remember, every two hours there should be a reapplication or less if sweating or getting wet!

You may have heard different things about different essential oils, but in our opinion doTERRA has the highest quality product. Their oils tend to be a bit pricier, but they are extremely effective and we have never had any issues with their performance.

For this project, we recommend you use your Lavender from the Beginner’s Trio of Essential Oils (Lavender, Lemon, and Peppermint) on Amazon for $66. The Lemon and peppermint are very common oils and will be used later so this is an excellent value! Just a quick reminder that lemon and lemongrass are two different oils and not substitute-able (link for lemongrass here and below). Combined with the amber glass spray bottle set for $18.99, you will have all the bottles you will need for essential oils, plus enough oils to make enough essential oils mosquito spray for a year or more.

Glass Spray Bottle, ESARORA Amber Glass Spray Bottle Set - Essential Oils - Cleaning Products - Aromatherapy (16OZ x 2, 8OZ x 2, 4OZ x 2, 2OZ x 2)

Citronella oil should be purchased from Plant Therapy, conveniently offered on Amazon for just $12.95. This is our only exception to the doTERRA for topical or internal use “policy” and only because doTERRA does not currently offer a standalone citronella oil.

If you opt to not go for the starter set, here are two links to Lavender ($30.67 on Amazon) and Lemongrass ($13.33 on Amazon).
